CV Hints & Tips

Whether you decide to head straight to work, go to university or go on to further training after school, now is a really good time to get a great CV together and learn how to perform well at interview. It is hard to get your CV just right first time around and if you need some extra help, we can create it for you. For more information on this service please call us on (09) 366 7300. If you would like to have a go at writing your own CV, keep these handy tips in mind:

Contact details: Make sure that the person reading your CV can contact you easily. Include your full name, address, email address, home number and cell phone number on the first page.

Work Experience: Baby sitting, paper round, gardening for your auntie, Saturdays in the dairy and summers in the fish and chip shop - all your work experience should be on your CV in reverse chronological order, which means you start with your most recent job first. Make sure you include the name of your employer, the dates you worked for him/her and the position you held at the time. Include a very short list of bullet points describing your duties.

Educational History: Make a note of the subjects you studied at school and put your grades in if they were very good.

Interests: Include a short overview of what you like to do outside of work; do include sports, hobbies and club memberships; don’t include shopping, socialising or sleeping as your favourite things to do in your spare time!

Cover letter: Keep your cover letter short, to the point and professional

Most importantly of all - you should get at least three people (with good spelling and grammar) to proof read your CV and cover letter before you apply for jobs and don’t forget to ask them to check it again if you make any changes.
